No Star Wars Campaign

Dear friend,

In April the Czech Parliament will have to take a stand about the construction of a U.S. military base and probably it will vote in favour of its installation, even though 70% of the population opposes this plan.Given the urgency of the situation, we have launched an on-line petition to exert pressure on the Parliament and ask that the matter be resolved with a referendum.

The NMD project of the United States – their national missile defense system, is a very complex project which involves the production of new weapons, and the installation of American military bases in different parts of the planet. In particular, in Europe, the first step is the installation of a radar system in the Czech Republic, and a base for interceptor missiles in Poland. This plan has divided Europe, which at the moment is not able to give a united, coherent and nonviolent response to the United States’ aggressive policies. The reaction of Russia and China has created a “cold war” atmosphere. International tensions are increasing, and the crazy arms race (both conventional and nuclear) has restarted. Above all, the bases are being installed to militarize and control space.

The majority of Czechs do not want foreign military bases on their territory. The majority of Czechs want to decide these problems themselves by means of a referendum: a fundamental instrument of any democracy.

You are being asked to support our nonviolent protest! This plan does not involve only us Czechs, but the whole of Europe and the whole world.
Sign our on-line petition, and pass it on to your friends!
Send us your messages of support! Help us collect a million signatures!

Humanist Forum of Athens - 15th and 16th of March 2008

Next 15th and 16th of March, the Humanist Forum of Athens about the nuclear desarmament will be organized.

Here the official video spot:

On March 15 People around the World Will Say: GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!

On March 15 People around the World Will Say: GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!
It will be five years this March 19 since the attack by the USA on Iraq; an attack which, according to latest estimates, led to the death of nearly one million people. This preventative war, waged without the authorization of UN Security Council, without the authorization of the world community, has set an entirely new direction in international policy making. Today, a preventative nuclear strike on Iran is openly discussed.

Hundreds of billions of dollars collected from us, the taxpayers every year are spent on the production of weapons and financing of wars. The war in Iraq alone has cost US citizens nearly 500 billion dollars. New deadly weapons including nuclear ones are being developed. Nearly thirty thousand nuclear warheads still exist in the world today – an amount that would suffice to destroy the entire planet and all of us on it 25 times over.

In this atmosphere of armament the United States are now coming with a plan to expand the Missile Defense System to Europe with two new military bases – one in the Czech Republic and one in Poland. This dangerous project increases international tensions and leads to a new arms race. Read it all...

Militarization of space

http://nauka.bg/forum/index.php?showtopic=2403

NATO Game Over - Brussels 22th of March

NATO Game Over
Through NATO, Europe is involved in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. European states train military forces for the NATO Response Force and due to NATO the US still maintains bases in Europe used for military interventions worldwide. During the Iraq war US soldiers deployed from their bases in Europe to the Persian Gulf. In Afghanistan NATO has taken the lead in the military occupation and a lot of European states have soldiers in Afghanistan.
Last but not least, NATO nuclear weapons are still deployed in Europe. And they are as illegal here as elsewhere. The coming year will be decisive for NATO's nuclear policy. On the summit of Bucharest beginning April (2 weeks after the NATO Game Over-action) NATO will start the process to develop a new Strategic Concept, the basic document outlining for the coming ten years the common military policy, including the nuclear policy. A year later, on the 60th anniversary of NATO, another summit will adopt this new Strategic Concept. Or the US tactical nuclear weapons in Europe will be withdrawn or they get a new role towards rogue states in the Middle East, that will be the discussion on the table.
In Bucharest missile defense is high on the agenda as well. NATO wants to bring this discussion to a conclusion, what could mean the adoption of the US missile defense plans as NATO policy.

Peace activists from all over Europe will join in Brussels, Belgium on March 22 2008 for the first edition of 'NATO - Game Over'. We go to NATO's headquarters and close them. We will enter and inspect NATO for evidence of war preparations and the deployment of nuclear weapons.
'NATO – Game Over' is not a ordinary demonstration, neither is it a game. It is a nonviolent and resolute attempt to close NATO. Up till today, every nonviolent direct action at or around NATO's headquarters was met with large numbers of police, miles of barbed wire, prohibitions,... a shameful waste of tax payers money. This will not stop us. Through nonviolent direct action we prevent wars and stop war crimes.

Some international news

Pre-emptive nuclear strike a key option, Nato told
Tuesday January 22, 2008 - The Guardian

The west must be ready to resort to a pre-emptive nuclear attack to try to halt the "imminent" spread of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, according to a radical manifesto for a new Nato by five of the west's most senior military officers and strategists.
Calling for root-and-branch reform of Nato and a new pact drawing the US, Nato and the European Union together in a "grand strategy" to tackle the challenges of an increasingly brutal world, the former armed forces chiefs from the US, Britain, Germany, France and the Netherlands insist that a "first strike" nuclear option remains an "indispensable instrument" since there is "simply no realistic prospect of a nuclear-free world".

Shocked THIS IS CRAZY!!! Mad

Norway opposed to US missile defense shield in Europe
OSLO, Feb 9 (KUNA) -- Norway expressed Saturday its opposition to the deployment of a US missile defense shield in Europe.
Defense Minister Anne-Grete Strom-Erichsen, upon arrival from the NATO conference held in Lithuania, said her country was the only member that publically declared its opposition to the deployment of the shield in Poland or the Czech Republic.
The shield is to protect Europe from long-range missiles launched from Iran or North Korea.
She explained that Norway's stance stemmed from its belief that NATO countries should defend themselves, and was also based on the Norwegian political stance against bringing any tension to the European continent.

Poland 'agrees' to host US shield
Poland and the US have reached an agreement in principle to install a controversial American missile defence system on Polish soil.
In return for hosting part of the shield, the US has said it will help bolster Poland's air defences.
The US wants to install interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar base in the Czech Republic.
Russia opposes the project, saying it would destabilise global security and undermine its own nuclear deterrent.
In October, Russian President Vladimir Putin compared the plans to the Cuban missile crisis of the 1960s, which saw the US and Soviet Union go to the brink of nuclear war.
Russia has threatened to point missiles at Europe if the US positions elements of the new missile shield near its borders.

'Middle of the road'
In response to this threat, Poland says it wants help to upgrade its air defences.
Speaking in Washington, Polish foreign minister Radek Sikorsky said he was satisfied that the security concerns Poland had raised would be dealt with.
"There is still a great deal of work for our experts... But yes, I am satisfied that the principles that we have argued for have been accepted," he said.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said: "We understand that there is a desire for defence modernisation in Poland and particularly for air defence modernisation in Poland. This is something that we support because it will make our ally, Poland, more capable."
America wants to install 10 interceptor missiles to protect against possible attack by what it calls rogue states, such as Iran and North Korea.
But Mr Sikorsky said there was still a long way to go.
"We are not at the end of the road as regards negotiations. We are in the middle of the road," he said.
"We have an agreement in principle."
Any final agreement will have to be ratified by the Polish parliament.
The Czech government aims to submit a draft accord on the radar base to parliament in April.
